The Cocoon Nebula (IC 5146) in Widefield

A Three-Night Dual-Location Pursuit Across Western North Carolina

This widefield portrait of the Cocoon Nebula (IC 5146) captures the star-forming region along with its expansive dark dust lane, Barnard 168. Sitting 2,500 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus, IC 5146 is a compact emission and reflection nebula embedded within a massive complex of interstellar dust. The central core is energized by a massive, B-type star, while the surrounding dark sky is dominated by dense, light-blocking dust clouds that trace back into the plane of the Milky Way.

A Closer Look: Nebula Core & Molecular Cloud

A closer crop on IC 5146 highlights the intricate details within the nebula's core and the dense interstellar structure supporting it. At center stage, the brilliant young star BD+46°3474 illuminates the surrounding stellar nursery, exciting hydrogen gas into a rich crimson glow while blue reflection nebulae shimmer around the periphery. Zooming in brings out the delicate filaments of the surrounding dark molecular cloud, showing where thick columns of interstellar gas and dust are actively collapsing to form the next generation of stars.

The Equipment Setup

To capture both the glowing compact core and the vast river of dark dust stretching across the frame, I used a super widefield setup:

  • Camera: ZWO ASI2600MM

  • Optics: Askar FMA180 Pro APO Refractor (180mm focal length)

The Capture Process

This image was built over three nights using a hybrid RGB and dual-band approach across two different imaging sites:

  • Night 1 (Grassland Observatory, Marshall): Dedicated 3 hours of Broadband RGB integration under dark skies to capture natural star colors and the subtle, dusty structures of B168.

  • Nights 2 & 3 (Mars Hill, NC): Added narrowband data using a dual-band filter to capture H-alpha and OIII emissions, bringing out the faint ionized gas details within the nebula's core and surrounding structure.
